Class Information

At my home studio on the west side of Los Angeles I usually teach five days a week, Tuesday thru Saturday.  Individual one-hour lessons are by appointment only. I teach beginners (aged 16+) through advanced players who want to focus on classical honkyoku or sankyoku.  Throughout the year I also host selected guest shakuhachi teachers for weekend teaching workshops that are open to my students and other interested shakuhachi enthusiasts from surrounding communities.  I have been hosting these special guest events for over ten years now and regulars include Kaoru Kakizakai from Japan and Riley Lee from Australia. My students also have opportunities to play with koto players and to participate in special 1-day workshops where a preselected piece, either a classical ensemble piece or a koto & shakuhachi duet piece, is the subject for the day.  These special koto workshops are always limited to 3 or 4 shakuhachi students per workshop.

I teach Tozan Ryu (都山流), Myoan Taizan Ha (明暗対山派), Yokoyama Honkyoku (横山本曲), and Jin Nyodo (神如道) Shakuhachi.
